letter to A young pilot
To the aspiring professional pilot who approached me at the Interna-
tional Women in Aviation Conference or friended me on Facebook:
Jenny T. BeaTTy
In meeting you, I was inspired to write this letter with suggestions for
taking steps that move you closer to your goal of becoming an airline pilot. This is intended to
be helpful encouragement, however it also contains what I call “hard truths”—advice based on
my personal experience and knowledge of the job and indus-
try that might be difficult to hear.
I would argue that
no one can advance in
an airline pilot career
alone. Every airline
pilot, whether male
or female, wealthy or
needy, military or
civilian, has relied on
the support, guidance,
and encouragement
of mentors.
